Ex-Super Eagles Striker Joseph Akpala Joins Club Brugge as Coach
Former Super Eagles forward Joseph Akpala has returned to Club Brugge this time in a coaching capacity as the Belgian giants announce his appointment as player development coach in their youth academy.
Akpala, who starred for the club from 2008 to 2012 netting 39 goals in 105 league appearances previously joined KV Kortrijk’s coaching staff in 2022, rising to interim manager in 2023. Now, he is set to train and mentor Brugge’s youngest talents, helping bridge the gap between academy and first-team levels.
The former Pepsi Football Academy graduate is seen as a valuable addition to Brugge’s structure, bringing both elite playing experience and coaching acumen. Club officials noted his deep connection to their system and his dedication to nurturing future stars.
Editorial
We applaud Club Brugge for tapping into Joseph Akpala’s rich heritage and nurturing instincts. As a prolific striker for the team and a former top-scorer in Belgian football, he understands both the pressures and potential of youth development. His move underscores a growing recognition clubs need coaches who have ‘been there’ on the pitch and in mentorship roles.
This appointment should inspire both academy players and fellow coaches. Seeing someone who once roared crowds into life now guiding their journeys sends a powerful message development isn’t theoretical it’s lived experience. We hope this signals a broader trend where former pros shape the next generation at every level of the club pyramid.
Transparency will matter too. Tracking player progress under Akpala’s leadership through public progress reports, match analysis sessions, or academy showcases can show results, not promise. It also helps build trust with fans and young families investing in their children’s football education.
This role offers Akpala scope to innovate. He could introduce mentorship systems, mental resilience workshops, and tailored training modules based on positional needs forward instinct, decision-making, finishing drills. Formally integrating his insights into technical curriculum would be a huge gain for Brugge’s talent pipeline.
Ultimately, this partnership bridges two eras: the golden days when Akpala lit up Jan Breydel Stadium and the future when homegrown stars aim to fill his boots. We expect his experience to enrich the academy, elevate training standards, and help identify the next of Super Eagles.
