Bayelsa Queens Ramp Up Squad Ahead of NWFL Season with Five Bold New Signings
Bayelsa Queens have bolstered their roster with five new players a mix of attackers, a midfielder and a defender as they prepare for the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU Zone B qualifiers and the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership season.
The incoming recruits include Janet Akekoromowei from Nasarawa Amazons, Mary Lucky from Abia Angels, Bankole Sofiat and Oladeji Oluwabunmi from Naija Ratels, and Kafiat Mafisere from Edo Queens.
Coach Whyte Ogbonda described the new arrivals as players “with real hunger to win,” emphasising that their technical ability and competitive edge will benefit the squad.
Akekoromowei will don the famous No. 9 shirt, while Lucky will sport No. 13. The club also revealed advanced negotiations are underway for at least three more signings to deepen squad depth.
These moves are part of the club’s strategy to build on their status as reigning NWFL champions and contend strongly both domestically and in continental competition.
Editorial
Bayelsa Queens’ recent transfer activity marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of women’s club football in Nigeria. The acquisition of five players across attack, midfield, and defence reflects a commitment to balance and ambition. By recruiting not only to fill roster spots, but to enhance competitiveness, the club signals that winning titles is not enough they aim to dominate.
These signings are laced with purpose. Bringing in proven attackers such as Janet Akekoromowei and Lucky Mary shows a hunger for goals. The inclusion of defensive solidity via Oladeji Oluwabunmi and creative energy from Kafiat Mafisere suggests the club is no longer content with reactive tactics they are building a side capable of dictating play. The willingness to negotiate for more players underlines that leaders at Bayelsa Queens understand that fatigue, injuries, and long campaigns demand depth.
We trust that this blend of experience and determination can deliver their goals: reclaim supremacy in Nigeria, shine in the WAFU zone qualifiers, and make waves on the continental stage. The fans deserve a team that not only but plays with vision and consistency. Their expectations are high. These signings make it clear Bayelsa Queens are ready to meet them, to meet us, head on.
