2FA not working for one user in microsoft 365 Software & Applications

Also, make sure they’re using apps that support 2FA—older clients sometimes skip the prompt. You can check their sign-in logs in Azure AD to see what’s going on during their login attempts. Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication detects unusual activity like repeated sign-in attempts, and may prevent additional attempts to counter security threats. If you’ve mistakenly made many sign-in attempts, wait until you can try again, or use a different MFA method for sign-in.
No prompt for MFA is happening in 365 apps Outlook desktop. OWA says MFA is satisfied. ONE user only.
- Try going here and looking a the specific users, check if they are set to disabled.
- Microsoft may limit repeated authentication attempts that are performed by the same user in a short period of time.
- One of the following steps could help you troubleshoot the issue.
- I’d start by checking if those users are somehow excluded from security defaults or if there’s a conditional access policy overriding them.
- If you’ve tried these steps but are still running into problems, contact your organization’s Help desk for assistance.
- When I switch from company’s Teams to client’s, I am asked to log in.
We had the issue where Outlook 2016 kept prompting for a password for an Office 365 user whose laptop was connected to their Office 365 account using Windows 10 Pro. The repeated issue logging in started after I enabled the modern authentication in the Office 365 administration panel. The user could use the Windows mail and calendar apps but Outlook wouldn’t connect and kept prompting for a password. Checking the Account in Word showed the correct authentication and subscription. Go to your device’s Settings and make sure push notifications are enabled and you have network connectivity. If you are still not able to add your account, please contact Support for personal accounts or reach out to your IT admin for work/school accounts.
Find solutions to common problems with MFA if you are having trouble approving your sign in requests
If you suspect someone else is trying to access your account, contact your IT administrator. The error could be caused by malicious activity, misconfigured MFA settings, or other factors. To investigate further, ask an IT administrator to look at the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.

I can’t sign in after multiple attempts

If your actions trigger alerts or deviate significantly from your typical patterns, we might interpret it as potentially risky behavior, leading to temporary block where we won’t send codes. There are a number of possible explanations for why verification codes don’t always arrive. Read through the list of the most common causes, and see if any of them apply to you. The user had Office 2015 and Office 2016 credentials and Teams credentials that we deleted. We checked with Word that the online Outlook email repair utility account was connected–it was and the we opened Outlook and it immediately connected.

Unfortunately when the problem occurs they’ve asked us to ring straight away but of course you can never get them instantly (we’ve just been given someone’s direct number now). To make a long story short we’ve since been asked to collect Outlook logs and install Fiddler to capture additional logging. We strongly recommend letting your organization’s Help desk know if your phone was lost or stolen. After your settings are cleared, you’ll be prompted to register for two-factor verification the next time you sign in.
We too have been seeing this more and more, all W10 on O365, although we use Okta as our MFA. I feel like this issue is getting progressively worse as the fix used to be clearing the credential manager or if it was bad uninstalling the entire Office Suite, clearing all traces and reinstalling and now we are seeing nothing helping how to fix Outlook not opening today it. Have looked all over and people have all sorts of possible solutions, but nothing we found to resolve the issue and get a new issue daily and just keep going through until it eventually works.
If you tried all of these steps and are still having issues, we recommend sending your log files for diagnostics. Open the app, go to the app’s top-level menu, and then select Send feedback. If nothing else works, please report your issue using the Send Feedback link from Authenticator settings.
Troubleshooting common problems with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Security verification messages are sent in the language of your account when the security info email/phone number was added. We won’t ask you to verify your security info every time you sign in. Occasionally, fix Outlook after Windows update issues we might ask you to check it again—for example, if you haven’t signed in for a long while. Problem doesn’t just happen on PC’s connected to the internal network, but can happen when a laptop is remote and connected via external wifi or mobile hotspot.
